GOLD TEAMWORK
Having talent and harnessing the true potential of that talent are two very different things. The great challenge that faces every leader, coach or manager is how to unite and focus the individuals in the team towards the common goal. The failure to harness this talent can mean the difference between significant accomplishments and results which cause stress, hardship and failure.
This path to success is strewn with many obstacles. Let us help you prevent some of these obstacles by introducing you to Gold Teamwork.Straight to the point, concise and practical, Gold Teamwork provides clever insight into the key elements required to develop a leading team.
There are many examples and models which outline the theoretical structure of teamwork. As with many aspects of modern life, many of these illustrations have taken relatively simple concepts and through poor explanation have made them seem difficult and complex.
The book is practical rather than scientific. It is based on specific observations, actual experiences and the personal philosophies of Bill Nelson. It contains perspective, detail and insight gained directly from his real life coaching experiences.
The approach outlines detailed strategies that you can easily translate and apply to your particular situation. It is formatted in a way that allows you to open to any chapter or page and easily understand the context and relevance of the information.
“Gold Teamwork sets out the guiding principles involved in moulding a team of champions into a champion team. Moreover you’ve achieved this in an easily understood and entertaining way. I found your description of the philosophies and actions necessary to create an environment where individual agendas can be set aside so that the team might realise its goals to be both practical and inspirational.”
Warren Bruce, Apple Computers Australia
SO WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT GOLD TEAMWORK?
Contained within the pages are real life examples, practical applications and insights. Here is what you will learn from Gold Teamwork:
- How the Australian Mens Road Cycling Team used clearly defined role definitions to achieve their first major international success.
- How the experiences of Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and Jacques Cousteau apply to your selection of people.
- How a NASA situation helps explain the fact that everyone has role to play.
- What caused the 1996 Australian Olympic Team to take responsibility for its own actions.
- How former US National Security Adviser and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, GeneralColin Powell, used the conflict and difference within a team to actually bring the team together.
- How the Australian Swimming team developed and applied the motto of Play for something greater than themselves.
- Teach your team how to get the job done through the interaction of former Pentridge jail inmate Graeme Alford and one of the biggest names in the world of business.
- Why and how the Australian Institute of Sport Mens Swimming Team takes responsibility to create, implement and uphold a set of standards, values and behaviours.
- How the South East Melbourne Magic Basketball Team selected people on attitude andcharacteras much as skill and experience and still won the National Championship.
- How the Australian Air Force practically applied the theory that two heads are better than one only when they are heading in the same direction.
- How Michael Jordan’s unselfishness helped make the Chicago Bulls the NBA Basketball team of the 90s.
Gold Teamwork contains relevant, useful guidance that any leader or group can easily identify with and put into practice on a daily basis. Each topic is highlighted and supported by real life stories and experiences of individual and collaborative inspiration and success.
Each story gives the reader a meaningful understanding of how Bill’s concepts have been successfully implemented. The book sets a new benchmark in how groups can work together to achieve results they thought were unattainable.
“I like the way the book delivers clear definitions of the elements of teamwork. These elements are clarified and amplified with short and simple snippets of wisdom from your own experience and the experience of others, showing that indeed “none of us are as good as all of us”. Coaching is important and this book probably more than any others I’ve read shows how a coach must be a leader, an active stimulus, for a team to bring forth desired results.
As you so clearly state, motivation comes from within, and so the coach’s art is to work towards an environment where team members’ own motivation is cultured and nurtured, not forced upon them. After reading the book, it’s no surprise that your teams have experienced great results and it seems that anyone who adopts some of these philosophies will certainly achieve positive outcomes.”
Steve Herbelin, Herbelin Publishing/Riverbank Books, USA
SO WHAT’S IN GOLD TEAMWORK AND HOW IS IT GOING TO HELP YOU AND YOUR TEAM?
Roles and responsibilities
Getting the right structure and representation on a team can take on many different twists and turns. There becomes an importance on how each and every role is clearly defined and understood. There is an associated education where each individual should know the significance of their role and at the same time be brought to realise that no-one’s role is any more important than anyone else’s, they are just different.
Leadership
Leadership is an act of faith and to get someone to truly follow your lead is indeed a significant sign of respect. So respect is an important trait of leadership but what are some of the other commonalities that great leaders share? What are the tell tale signs to highlight that your leadership is working? And through all of this where should you position yourself as a leader to get the best results? Do you always need to be leading from the front?
Environment
As the team continues on its journey of accomplishment and development, why is it so important for both the leader and the team to understand the environment they operate in? How can you take an old saying like ‘there is no I in team’ and use its rationale to get each team member to leave their ego at the door. And as you work on changing the approach of the individual, what are the corresponding stages or levels of evolution, development and maturity of the team itself?
Communication
In this age of email, internet and convenient communication, why is face to face communication within a team so important? Why should the significance and benefit of listening never be lost? Communication within a team brings with it many different advantages, none more important though than the development of trust. Trust allows the team to say what needs to be said when it needs to be said and with everyone understanding the benefit of open and honest dialogue.
Goals
Without the right direction, the right goals and the right targets you will have a lot of committed, enthusiastic and highly motivated people heading in a million different directions. Our approach is to allow the individual the opportunity to pursue and achieve their own goals, but at the same time have the understanding and enjoyment of knowing that they are also achieving the team’s definition of success – in other words, a win-win situation.
Rules by Which we Live
This is not about what time coffee break is or what uniform you have to wear. The Rules by Which we Live is about how the team acts and interacts with each other. What are the actions, behaviors, standards and values that make the team what it is? And how are these aspects developed, implemented, upheld and owned by the team itself?
Motivation
How is it that you get the team either individually or collectively to never give up? What are the steps to having people understand that motivation is an internal emotion and not an external stimulus? How do you continue to develop and correctly apply that motivation to allow the team to realise its true potential?
Success
One of the most important aspects of effective teamwork is outlining what is the team’s definition of success is. What are the approaches needed to get the team to play hard and strong but not to the point of win at all costs? As a team what do you do to see that you are not only respected for the results you achieve but also for how you achieved those results?
Live locally, think globally
Do you know what is going on around you? What is the opposition doing? Know the game that is being played and understand how it is being played but never compromise the level of focus on you, what you are doing and why. Make sure that the team is getting the best out of every individual, resource and opportunity that is available. By taking this approach and applying this philosophy the grass will look greener on this side of the fence.
United we stand, divided we fall
This is one of the most common phrases when it comes to teamwork but what are some of the key aspects to bringing or keeping a team together? Praise your team mates first, respect your team mates, respect the role they play and get them to respect it as well. Work hard to create that element of trust between all members of the team. These are just some of the elements that if applied in the correct way will go a long way in creating effective teamwork.

Whenever Bill is brought in to work with a particular team, the first question he asks is ‘how does this team communicate with each other?’ Communication within a team specifically tells him where the team is at, how it operates and what it’s like. More importantly, it is a factual indicator of where the team stands in terms of trust.
This PDF e-book provides valuable information on how teams should approach the topic of communication. It focuses extensively on the three levels on which teams talk and provides understanding of the key elements that lead to a team not communicating openly and effectively.
